Cape Town – A group of formerly disadvantaged young South Africans are now better prepared for employment in the local renewable energy sector thanks to a two-week training programme.
A collaboration between local business consultancy Cultiver and the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Western Cape, the training curriculum covers aspects of climate change, renewable energy technologies and the socio-economic implications of the Just Energy Transition, according to ESI Africa.
The Building Renewable Energy Conscious Communities (BRWCC) programme, supported by Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies, aims to provide unemployed youth with training and exposure to the renewable energy sector as well as create short-term employment opportunities for them.
Fizeka Stuurman, chief legacy builder at Cultiver, says the programme was “designed as to create awareness among those who will be most affected by climate change and the Just Transition, particularly the youth”.
CEO Matt Cullinan says the Atlantis SEZ – which is at the heart of the Western Cape’s Greentech initiatives – is committed to supporting sustainable development and economic empowerment of communities surrounding the business.
After each training session, Renewable Energy Champions are chosen to spread awareness of climate change and renewable energy through their communities.
