Western Cape govt commits R7bn to tackle load shedding

Cape Town – Premier Alan Winde has revealed plans for the Western Cape government to invest R7 billion over the next three years to address the challenges posed by load shedding in the province.

In his State of the Province Address, Winde emphasised that at stage four of load shedding, the Western Cape incurs daily costs of up to R43 million, EWN reported.

Despite facing opposition heckling, Winde expressed confidence in the province’s progress toward becoming the first to eliminate load shedding.

“I also want to say that in this province, between our province and our municipalities, we have budgeted R7 billion for the next three years to make the Western Cape energy resilient, and in that, it’s about partnership with the private sector,” the report quoted Winde as saying.
According to SABC, he said that the primary areas of focus for the government were safety and energy.
“Right now my cubic focus is safety and energy, if we fix those two things you then enable the economy even further, that it is already enabled, so it will always be safety. I suppose the jobs are the second thing. I am trying to get us energy efficient in the province, 5700 megawatts are what we need, we only use 4000 at peak, so we are investing in energy for the future. We need to end load shedding but that is because of the economy,” said Winde.
