Cape Town – Former president Thabo Mbeki has expressed concerns over the state of South Africa’s power stations and suggested that the delay in completing the Kusile Power Station is a deliberate decision.
In an interview with SABC’s Sophie Mokoena, Mbeki questioned why it has taken 19 years to finish the power station and said that someone may be deliberately obstructing the effectiveness of the country’s power stations.
He did not disclose who this person might be.
“Those power stations were Kusile and Medupi. We have not finished Kusile up to now. That is 19 years later. How do you explain that? Somebody needs to look at that in a focused way. How do you explain this, you can’t take 19 years to finish a power station.
“It is because somebody did not want the power station to be finished. Deliberate conscious, so we must find out that in order to move,” Mbeki said.

South Africa has been facing an energy crisis and frequent load shedding, which has had a significant impact on businesses and the economy.
Eskom recently warned that load shedding may reach stage 8 during winter.
The country has experienced almost 300 days of deliberate power cuts between 2022 and 2023, according to The Outlier.
