Cape Town – Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has withdrawn a ministerial determination for procuring 2,500 MW of new nuclear capacity, acknowledging inadequate public consultation before regulatory approval.
Addressing the media on Friday, Ramokgopa said that this decision precedes a court case initiated by the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI) and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, who argued that the determination was unlawful due to procedural flaws and outdated planning documents.

Ramokgopa said that any new determination will align with an updated IRP and include comprehensive stakeholder consultation.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nuclear energy but emphasised that future projects will be scaled according to affordability and updated planning.
