Cape Town – Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Eskom have apologised to South Africans for the ongoing Stage 3 load shedding, which started on Friday and is expected to last until Monday morning.
The power cuts were triggered by a 2,700 MW loss in 14 hours, affecting Koeberg Unit 2 and two Kusile units due to adverse weather.
Eskom also cited planned maintenance outages as part of winter preparations.
Speaking diring a media briefing on Saturday, Ramokgopa acknowledged the setbacks, emphasising that load shedding remains an anomaly and a barrier to economic growth.
“I really want to say I am exceptionally disappointed about the events that have happened. In the past 30 days or so, in February we came again on the back of some failures at Lethabo and Matimba and we initiated stages of load shedding,” he said.
He expressed disappointment over repeated power failures but assured the public that efforts are being made to eliminate load shedding.
The minister remains hopeful that power stability will be restored by Monday.
