Cape Town — Minister of Tourism Patricia De Lille has advised SA Tourism to not go through with their proposed sponsorship of English Premier League club Tottenham, labelling it “unlawful and invalid”.
After reports about SA Tourism’s proposal for Tottenham spread on social media, the organisation received backlash for its plans.
“The board approved the proposed deal subject to consultation with the minister of tourism and minister of finance. That’s why my advice to the board is to stop proceeding with the deal,” De Lille said.
“We have to be much more careful and give careful consideration in everything we do as a government. Money must be used wisely and prudently as we are instructed to look after public funds.”
De Lille said that government needs to give careful consideration to everything it does because of the country’s current economic state.
“Money must be spent wisely and prudently at all times as we are entrusted with public funds.”
De Lille added that she received legal advice about the deal shortly after she had been appointed, which stated that the deal was ‘unlawful and invalid’ for various reasons.
