Cape Town – Minister of Electricity and Energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has expressed confidence that the government will offer relief on proposed electricity tariff hikes.
Ramokgopa was speaking at the WINDABA conference in Cape Town.
He said that while the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) will handle the tariff process, the government aims to ease the impact of price increases.
“I am confident where I am that the issues around the tariff, we can provide some degree of relief but we are not going to soil the NERSA process. NERSA is going to run its process, I will make a submission as a minister through that process,” Ramokgopa said.
Ramokgopa attributed the recent period of no load shedding to Eskom’s system resilience and efforts to tackle corruption.
He also noted that the government was addressing challenges in renewable energy projects, particularly in transporting large wind turbines through South African ports.
