Cape Town – City Power confiscated at least 60,000 kg of illegal cables worth approximately R6 million from the Kanana informal settlement in Rabie Ridge, Johannesburg.
City Power said that such illegal connections were significantly contributing to network overload and infrastructure damage, resulting in extended power outages.
“City Power is taking firm action against illegal connections in the Kanana informal settlement. During our recent operation, we confiscated approximately 60,000 kilograms of aluminum cable conductors, valued at an estimated R6 million.
“By removing these resources, we aim to prevent future illegal reconnections and ensure a safer, more reliable power supply for all,” the power utility said in a statement.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena highlighted that the rampant illegal connections necessitate load reduction measures to prevent further damage, The Citizen reported.
In just a few months, the area has seen the replacement of ten transformers due to damage caused by these illegal connections. Mangena noted that managing this situation is costly and unfair to paying customers in surrounding areas.
