Cape Town – Praising lower levels of load shedding will help motivate those working to fix things at Eskom to do more, according to Eskom chairperson Mpho Makwana.
In an interview on Newzroom Afrika, Makwana said South Africans should celebrate stages 2 and 3 of load shedding instead of only complaining about stage 7 and 8.
“In this period we must celebrate the times when we’ve had lower levels of load shedding, and there have been many of those when we’ve been on stage 3 and stage 2. We must not just lament stage 7 and stage 8. There’s been days when we’ve had stage 3 and 2.
“If we want this thing to change, celebrate those things that people like [Eskom’s head of generation] Thomas Conradie are fixing, celebrate those things [power station manager] Bheki Nxumalo at Eskom road tech industries are fixing; then we encourage them to do more,” said Makwana.
He also elaborated on how Eskom leadership will be working with Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa to end the country’s electricity crisis.
On Tuesday, Eskom said it had suspended stage 5 load shedding “due to some recovery in the generation capacity over the past 24 hours”.
It said stage 4 load shedding would continue until further notice.
On Wednesday afternoon, Eskom again downgraded load shedding, to stage 3, because of some improvement in generation capacity over the previous 24 hours.
The power utility said it would update the public as soon as any significant changes occurred.
