Cape Town – A truck driver has been arrested for allegedly stealing heavy fuel oil intended for Eskom’s Camden Power Station in Mpumalanga.
The arrest followed an investigation by the NatJOINTS’ Energy Safety and Security Priority Committee, established to address security issues at Eskom.
The 42-year-old suspect, accused of diverting and selling oil worth R500 000 for R40 000, worked for a company contracted by Eskom.
He allegedly failed to deliver the oil to Eskom, instead directing it to a private facility for personal gain.
“he suspect is accused of diverting and selling heavy fuel oil worth R500 000 for R40 000. At the time of the crime, he was working for a company contracted by Eskom to deliver the oil at Camden Power Station in Mpumalanga. He never delivered the oil to Eskom, and instead delivered it to a private facility and pocketed the money for his benefit,” police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said.

Heavy fuel oil is crucial for electricity production.
The arrest is part of broader efforts to combat theft and corruption in the energy sector, with numerous cases reported to the South African Police Service.
