Cape Town – Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) says there were 21 000 job losses in the first quarter of 2023.
The employment statistics released by Stats SA for the period between January and March 2023 showed a decrease in employment in various sectors, although some sectors experienced gains.
The total number of people currently employed in the country is approximately 10 million.

However, over the past financial year, there were 97 000 job losses across different sectors.
The trade industry experienced the highest number of job losses, followed by business services, transport, and construction.
On the other hand, the community services industry emerged as a significant job contributor, and there were also gains in the mining, manufacturing, and electricity industries. Stats SA also reported a drop in basic salary and wages paid to employees, amounting to R11.8 billion from December 2022 to March 2023.
