Cape Town – Eskom says it has extended stage 2 load shedding until Saturday morning.
“Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented continuously until 05:00 on Saturday,” the power utility said in a statement on Tuesday.
Eskom had initially announced on Monday that it had implemented stage 2 load shedding from 21:00 until o5:00 on Wednesday.
“This load shedding is required in order for Eskom to replenish the emergency generation reserves, which have been utilised significantly since the past weekend,” Eskom said in a statement.

It continued: “Since this morning, a unit each at the Matla, Kendal, Matimba, Kusile and Grootvlei power stations tripped, while a unit each at Arnot and Handrina power stations were forced shut down. This in addition to other units that had tripped during the weekend, reduced available generation capacity, forcing Eskom to rely heavily on emergency generation reserves to keep the lights on.”
According to EWN, Eskom’s group chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer has been giving a public update on the state of the power grid.
“We all know due to the unreliability and unpredictability of the generators and to prevent the need for any higher stage of load shedding, we, unfortunately, have to inform the public that we will continue with stage two load shedding up until 5am on Saturday morning, the 12th of March,” the report quoted Oberholzer as saying.
