Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has called a special Cabinet meeting to discuss the contentious national budget, which was postponed due to disagreements over a proposed 2% increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT).
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is expected to present an alternative budget proposal during this meeting, scheduled for 2 pm today (Monday, 24 February, 2025), according to reports.
The original budget presentation was delayed last week after coalition partners failed to reach an agreement on the VAT hike, leading to its rescheduling for March 12.
The proposed VAT increase has been a point of contention within the Government of National Unity, with parties expressing concerns about its potential impact on the economy and citizens.
The postponement of the budget has raised questions about the government’s ability to effectively manage fiscal policies and address economic challenges.
