Cape Town – South Africa’s largest food company, Tiger Brands, is recalling at least 20 million Koo and Hugo’s canned vegetables and beans, reports said on Monday.
The move came following safety concerns due to “an extremely small number of defective cans from a packaging supplier”, eNCA reported, adding that the cans may have a defective side seam weld that could cause leaks.
Tiger Brands is recalling KOO and Hugo’s canned vegetable products that were produced between 1 May 2019 to 5 May 2021. They say no health issues have been reported to date, but there is a “low probability of illness and injury” if the contaminated products are consumed. pic.twitter.com/4L4tv6UTvD

This development, according to Fin24, amounted to a recall of 9% of annual production and the final impact was estimated to amount to up to R650 million.
The company, however, said no health issues had been reported to date, but there was a “low probability of illness and injury” if contaminated products were consumed.
The products being recalled included Koo Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce, Koo Butter Beans, Koo Chakalaka, and Koo Mixed vegetables, among numerous others.
These were produced between 1 May 2019 to 5 May 2021.
Affected canned vegetable products can be returned to any supermarket or wholesale outlet for a refund, reports said.
