Cape Town – South Africa may consider turning to Russia or Iran to expand its civilian nuclear power capacity, according to Minister Gwede Mantashe, despite concerns from the United States.
The country aims to add 2,500 megawatts of new nuclear capacity to address electricity shortages and reduce emissions.
However, the US has raised concerns about South Africa’s relations with Iran, with President Donald Trump halting aid over alleged nuclear ties.
South Africa denies any nuclear cooperation with Iran.
“We can’t have a contract that says Iran or Russia must not bid, we can’t have that condition,” Reuters quoted Mantashe as saying.
