Cape Town – The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group’s (PMBEJD) Household Affordability Index has revealed a rise in the average price of the household food basket in April 2024, increasing by about R58 compared to March 2024, now standing at R5,336.
The index monitors food price data from various locations across South Africa.
In April, 27 food items increased in price, with vegetables such as onions, tomatoes, carrots, and spinach seeing significant hikes.
Meanwhile, some items, including potatoes, tea, fish, apples, and oranges, experienced price drops.
The data also highlights variations in food basket costs across different regions, with Johannesburg showing the highest increase, while Springbok, Pietermaritzburg, and Mtubatuba saw decreases.
