Cape Town – The Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck have signed a joint declaration of intent to establish the South African German Hydrogen Task Force.
This collaboration aims to tap into the potential of the green hydrogen economy, which is considered a promising sector for clean energy with a global export potential of around $300 billion.
“The country holds approximately 80% of the world’s platinum group metals (PGMs) and 40% of the world’s platinum and palladium supplies which are key components in the production of hydrogen – making South Africa potentially a key player in the future of the market,” a report said.
The partnership between the two countries seeks to connect South African developers in the green hydrogen market with German off-takers who can provide additional funding for projects and support in creating commercially viable ventures in South Africa to meet international green hydrogen demand.
The task force will also facilitate business-to-business opportunities between companies from both countries.
One of the key initiatives outlined in the declaration is the establishment of a Hydrogen Valley, stretching from Limpopo through Johannesburg to Durban.
This valley will serve as a platform for launching hydrogen projects in various hubs, aiming to stimulate economic growth and job creation in the country.
Overall, the task force will focus on the creation, development, and expansion of the green hydrogen market.
