Cape Town – Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has emphasised the need for significant investment in Africa’s energy sector to ensure a sustainable future energy mix and global competitiveness.
Speaking at the 17th edition of the Africa Energy Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday, Ramokgopa stressed that discussions over the next three days should focus on designing investments that align with Africa’s energy ambitions.
He pointed out that Africa’s share of global energy investment remains below 5%, urging a focused effort to close the financing gap to meet the continent’s energy goals.
Ramokgopa also addressed the broader geopolitical landscape, noting that issues like mineral nationalisation, protectionism, and the weaponisation of trade are becoming increasingly prominent.

He argued that these factors require Africa to have an honest conversation with itself about its energy strategy.
Despite being the most mineral-rich continent, Africa remains the most energy-deprived and underdeveloped region globally, he added.
“So, it’s going to require a significant amount of investment. So, you can see that the transversal or the common trend here is about investment. How do we design those investments that are going to help us achieve the kind of ambition that we have set for ourselves,” Ramokgopa said.
“Africa’s share of global energy investment remains below 5%, and this is the point I am making that the significant… the conversations that we ought to have in relation (to) how best we close this financing gap on the continent.”
