Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Minister for Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa as the acting finance minister while Enoch Godongwana takes a leave of absence.
Ramokgopa, who became the energy czar in March to address the electricity crisis, assumed the role on Monday, Bloomberg News reported.
The appointment is described as normal ministerial protocol, with Godongwana on leave after presenting the medium-term budget policy statement.
Ramokgopa will serve in the acting capacity until November 22, after which Godongwana plans to resume his duties, including attending the G20 Africa Compact meeting in Berlin next week, the report said.
According to Times Live, reports suggesting Godongwana’s hospitalization due to a serious illness were dismissed by the Treasury.
The Presidency confirmed the temporary role of Ramokgopa but did not provide further details, the report said.
“Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has been acting as the minister of finance from 13 November until 22 November. Minister Godongwana will attend the G20 Africa Compact next week,” the report quoted the Treasury as saying in an email.
