Cape Town — South African NGO Africa4Palestine has retracted its call for a boycott of Woolworths after the retailer announced that it currently stocked no imports from Israel.
The NGO’s Tisetso Magama said on Wednesday that the group supported the decision by Woolworths not to stock goods from Israel. This came after Woolworths CEO Roy Baggatini issued a statement saying: “We do not have any products on our shelves that are for sale that have been imported from Israel”.
“Not stocking products from Israel aligns with the principles of ethical consumerism,” Magama said. “By not stocking Israeli products, a company demonstrates its commitment to being a socially responsible corporate citizen.”
“We will be informing our partners and progressive organisations that #BoycottWoolworths campaign is no longer necessary,” he said.
According to IOL, the EFF’s Julius Malema had also called on stores to stop selling Israeli goods.
