Cape Town – Truck drivers have reportedly threatened to bring some major roads in the country to a standstill on Sunday.
According to The Witness, All Truck Drivers’ Forum and Allied South Africa said the routes that may be affected included the N3, N11 highway to Newcastle, M4 and M7, N2 and N34.
“We want safety of the truck drivers on the roads. We want government to do away with labour brokers. All truck companies must comply with the collective agreement and our demand for R37 000 basic salary must be met,” the report quoted the secretary Sifiso Nyathi as saying.
Meanwhile, eNCA reported that migrant truckers had until the end of June to get proper work permits.
The Labour Department will conduct inspections and workers and employers may find themselves in trouble, the report said.
“As of the 30th of June 2023, those individuals who are employed in South Africa through anything other than a work permit will no longer be legal,” Gavin Kelly from the Road Freight Association told the television broadcaster.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) warned lawlessness will not be tolerated, The Citizen reported.
Police will be on high alert, ready to “prevent and combat any form of criminality”, Natjoints said.
