Cape Town – International grocery chain store Spar sparked a debate on social media after a poster that prohibits customers from shopping in their pyjamas, made it on the walls of one of its stores.
According to IOL, the chain store said on Friday that some of its stores had received complaints from customers who were uncomfortable with sleepwear being worn by some shoppers at its stores.
Following that a poster by the chain store trended on social media.
“Dear customers. No pyjamas or nightgowns allowed,” the poster that had Spar branding read.

It remained unclear where and when the poster was placed.
Spar said that each store was individually owned and required to comply with all legislation.
“However, some stores have had complaints from customers that are uncomfortable with sleepwear worn in the store. In these cases the owners have exercised their rights of admission reserved and requested that customers do not wear sleepwear in their stores,” the retailer said as quoted by the report.
A similar announcement was made by Spar in 2016.
The grocery chain store told EWN that its policy did not dictate what customers can and can’t wear.

“In terms of group policy, you can wear whatever you want when shopping in a Spar store. We will never dictate what you can and cannot wear, within the bounds of decency. And each of our stores would be different. If you were a retailer on the Durban beachfront it would be acceptable for someone to come in a swimming costume and slops,” the report quoted the group’s Marketing Executive, Mike Prentice as saying then.
The latest poster has received mixed reactions from Tweeps.
Some felt that it was inappropriate and unhygienic to visit a store in sleepwear, while others felt that shops had no right to dictate how people dressed.
Take a look at some of the Twitter reactions below:
I think its spot on by management. No one should be allowed if wearing sleepwear. Its very unhygenic. https://t.co/Ho3dwxvaJ5

The number of people who don’t have pajamas but sleep in their clothes like track suits and t-shirts, leggings etc who also just wake up and go to the supermarket, but are allowed in because theirs is not sleepwear specific, this rule is lame https://t.co/EMfTuqFUyC
