Cape Town — The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a 12.7% electricity tariff increase for Eskom, effective April 2025.
The decision is part of Eskom’s multi-year price determination plan, which also includes smaller increases of 5.36% for 2026 and 6.19% for 2027.
Eskom had initially requested a 36.15% hike for 2025, citing financial sustainability concerns. However, public opposition was strong, with businesses warning of closures and households fearing higher living costs.
Nersa adjusted Eskom’s revenue allowances to R384 billion for 2025, R409 billion for 2026, and R435 billion for 2027, balancing Eskom’s financial stability with affordability concerns.
The regulator acknowledged the economic challenges but stressed the need for a sustainable electricity supply.
