Cape Town – The last week has brought positive developments for Eskom, as lower demand for electricity and fewer breakdowns have bolstered confidence in avoiding Stage 4 load shedding this summer.
Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa expressed optimism that the improved performance of generation units is a permanent trend, thanks to Eskom’s maintenance efforts.
He said that the addition of three units from Kusile by year-end is expected to significantly improve the power supply situation.
Ramokgopa said that while challenges remain, progress is being made, with the energy availability factor sustaining close to 60%.
“We are not out of the woods, but we are turning the corner. The fact that we can go for a day without load shedding is psychologically (important). It is a major victory. The energy availability factor is sustaining close to 60%, and then we will return three Kusile units. There is going to be a significant improvement in the energy situation,” Ramokgopa said on Monday during his weekly briefing.

He said that the return of Kusile units and reduced breakdowns are contributing to the positive outlook, although partial load losses still pose a concern.
Lower demand, around 27,000MW at peak times, compared to the previous 31,000MW, has been a significant factor, reflecting the state of the country’s economy.
This lower demand, combined with upcoming additions to the grid, suggests a more stable electricity situation for South Africa in the near future.
