Cape Town – The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is on high alert after 10 000 City of Johannesburg employees, affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), staged a mass strike, blocking major highways on Thursday.
The workers demand R10.3 million in back payments dating back to 2016, following unresolved issues from a 1995 salary freeze.
Though an agreement was reached to disperse, Samwu has threatened to resume the strike until worker salaries are adjusted to reflect the city’s category 10 status, reports said.
JMPD remains prepared for further unrest.
