Cape Town — Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, listed logistical challenges, continuous load shedding and rampant crime as key contributors hindering South Africa’s economic growth.
Godongwana’s comments came shortly after StatsSA revealed South Africa’s economy grew by a measly 0.1% in the last quarter of 2023. Godonwana also weighed in on the talks between South African Airways (SAA) and Takaso Consortium, saying a partnership between the two was necessary to ensure the survival of SAA, SABC News reported.
Godongwana said, while there are calls for government to introduce a basic income grant, he believes it’s possible to introduce one only if other social security grants can be integrated into one basket.
The minister has also weighed in on the finances of the City of Ekurhuleni, adding that Treasury will be taking a closer look at the municipality’s books. The municipality is currneltty governed by an African National COngress (ANC) and Economic Freedom FIghters (EFF) coalition and found itself in hot water after failing to submit its 2023 financials.
