Cape Town – Data from Statistics South Africa reveals a 1.2% decline in formal sector employment, with a loss of 133,000 jobs in the third quarter of 2024.
Total formal employment dropped from 10.7 million to 10.6 million.
Key sectors contributing to the decline include community services, business services, manufacturing, transport, mining, and electricity.

Full-time employment fell by 44,000 year-on-year, while part-time employment decreased by 119,000 quarter-on-quarter, primarily due to losses in community services, electricity, and transport sectors, Director for Quarterly Employment Statistics at Stats SA Matlapane Masupye said.
“Full-time employment decreased by 44 000 year-on-year between September 2023 and September 2024. Part-time employment decreased by 119 000 quarter-on-quarter from 1 270 000 in June 2024 to 1 151 000 in September 2024. This was due to decreases in the following industries, community services 128 000, electricity and transport with 1000 each. Part-time employment decreased by 250 000 year-on-year,” Masupye said.
