Eskom urges prepaid users to update meters by November 24 to avoid power loss

Cape Town – Eskom has warned prepaid electricity customers to update their meters by November 24, 2024, to avoid losing power.

Meters with Key Revision Number 1 (KRN1) will stop accepting electricity tokens after the deadline, rendering them inoperable once current credit runs out. Replacing such meters could cost up to R12,000.

“To prevent the meter from becoming inoperable, losing power and incurring replacement costs, it is critical that all customers, including those who have not purchased electricity in the past six months or more, buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors by November 24 2024.

“This will provide them with two sets of 20-digit codes needed to recode and update their meters. We started our public awareness campaigns in August 2023 and we continue to ask users to come forward so we can offer help,” the power utility said.

It explained that affected meters may belong to customers who haven’t purchased electricity in over six months or those using unauthorised tokens.

Eskom assured customers that it is ready to provide tokens to those who have not yet updated their meters, enabling them to continue purchasing electricity securely after November 24.

The power utility said that customers who complete the recoding process before the deadline will enjoy seamless token purchases from authorised vendors and uninterrupted electricity supply.

Eskom has been running awareness campaigns since August 2023 and assures that customers who comply will continue to purchase electricity seamlessly.
