Cape Town – Eskom has proposed significant electricity tariff increases over the next three years, with a 36% hike for direct customers in 2025, followed by 12% and 9% increases in 2027 and 2028.
This follows a 13% increase earlier in 2024.

The proposal has sparked controversy, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) launching a petition, which has gathered over 100,000 signatures.
Eskom has applied for tariff hikes for the next three years, with 36.15% set for 2025, 11.81% for the 2026/27 financial year and 9.10% for 2028.
Eskom’s tariff hikes have caused an uproar among South Africans, with millions unable to afford to buy electricity.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is currently seeking public comments on the proposal, with a final decision expected in March 2025, and new tariffs to take effect in April.
