Cape Town — Eskom has warned that there is a high risk that South Africa may experience load shedding this coming weekend after 10 months without any power interruptions.
In a statement, Eskom CEO Dan Marokane said Eskom is now in a good position due to the success of the Generation Recovery Plan but may be forced into loadshedding at short notice due to breakdowns.
“This is a potentially tem porary setback. Loadshedding is largely behind us due to the structural improvements in our generation fleet,” he said.
“However, over the past seven days, we have experienced several breakdowns that require extended repair times. This has necessitated the use of all our emergency reserves, which now need to be replenished,” he added,
Marokane said it would monitor the status of its emergency reserves and, as a result of the breakdowns, Stage 4 loadshedding may be implemented this weekend and further updates would be provided in due course.
