Cape Town – CEO of Eskom Dan Marokane reflected on his first 100 days in office during a press briefing last week, highlighting his strategies for managing the utility amid challenges.
According to Times Live, he emphasised building on previous recovery efforts, focusing on Eskom’s unbundling process, and enhancing stakeholder relations.
“It is on the back of this strategic initiative that [we are] comfortable that there is an opportunity for us to place Eskom in a position where it continues to play a leading role in electricity supply in the country.
“We will, as we do the transition, also focus on the continuation of the operational recovery. It’s important that the generation recovery plan is taken to its fullest level, that we strengthen and beef up governance within the business and deal with aspects that are troublesome … and also set up those businesses that are going to be unbundled on a path that they are future-proof,” the reort quoted Marokane as saying.
Marokane stressed the importance of a competent team and personal well-being in handling the demands of the role, aiming to move Eskom beyond load-shedding and strengthen governance.
He also addressed the critical issue of municipal debt and expressed concern over skills shortages within the organisation.
Marokane was announced as the new CEO on 8 December and he officially took office on 31 March 2024.
“The Eskom Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Dan Marokane as the new Group Chief Executive of Eskom. Mr Marokane returns to Eskom after he and three other executives were suspended following an ethical stand they took against state capture, fraud and corruption,” Eskom said at the time.
