Cape Town – Johannesburg City Power has objected to Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff hikes, warning that a cumulative increase of 66% over the next three years would severely impact municipalities and households, worsening poverty, unemployment, and social unrest.
Eskom aims to generate over R1.4 trillion in revenue between 2026 and 2028, with a 36.15% increase from April 2025.
City Power proposed that future hikes be capped at 11% annually to balance Eskom’s financial needs with the financial strain on consumers.

“Our submission is in line with a collective decision taken by municipalities in Gauteng to reject the 36.15% tariff increase which is exorbitant,” EWN quoted City Power Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena as saying.
The utility also raised concerns about Eskom’s operating costs and recommended measures to avoid unsustainable price shocks.
