Cape Town – City Power says it will implement load reduction to prevent grid collapse, with power cuts starting on Monday.
The outages will occur during peak times (6am-10am and 4pm-10pm) in high-density areas with high electricity usage.
This decision follows efforts to encourage energy conservation.

Affected areas are those at risk of overloading equipment.
Power will also intensify the use of ripple relay systems to manage electricity consumption.
“Electricity consumption in the City of Johannesburg has reached critical levels, forcing the city’s energy entity, City Power, to embark on stringent measures to protect the grid from total collapse. These measures include intensifying the implementation of ripple relay systems to cut electricity to geysers in homes where the systems are under threat,” spokesperson, Isaac Mangena said.
