Cape Town – City Power in Johannesburg will take over the management of load shedding in the city starting from November 6, following an agreement with Eskom.
City Power has pledged to limit load shedding periods to a maximum of two hours, even during more severe stages like Stage 5 and above, as four-hour slots have proven unsustainable for local businesses, said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
“As City Power, we have our processes, systems and also technical capabilities in place to take over the added load shedding operations as part of the new schedule. The revised block and schedules will be available for City Powe customers on the 6th of November,” said Mangena.
This change will impact load shedding schedules in Johannesburg and other Gauteng areas.
City Power aims to prevent job losses by managing load shedding and plans to exempt certain larger companies from power cuts by reconfiguring the network.

However, technical complexities will still require Eskom to manage load shedding for some City Power customers.
Both entities will continue to explore technical solutions to enable City Power to fully take over load shedding operations for its remaining customers.
Earlier this year, Eskom temporarily assumed control of load shedding from the City of Ekurhuleni due to the municipality’s failure to implement power cuts to protect large local industries. Control was returned to the City in July.
