Cape Town – International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor has emphasised BRICS’ pivotal role in shaping a new global order.
The minister spoke during a speech in Russia on Tuesday.
“The BRICS bloc is a legitimate voice of the global South regarding global governance reform. We also remain a critical player in global agenda setting for economic, political and social cooperation,” Pandor said.
The expanded BRICS bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia) met to discuss global governance reform and conflict resolution.
Pandor highlighted BRICS as a voice for the global South, promoting multilateralism and progressive ideals.
“Therefore, for our collective, multilateralism remains the only solution to successfully address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, underdevelopment, climate change, migration, disease, human trafficking, terrorism, and hunger, and to ensure an environment of sustainable peace and continuous development.
“I am convinced that our mutually beneficial cooperation through BRICS uplifts communities instead of increasing their vulnerability,” she said.
She urged accelerated action towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, citing current global economic risks and inequalities.
Pandor affirmed South Africa’s commitment to a successful future summit to bridge development gaps and reform global governance.
