Cape Town – Amazon is set to launch its online marketplace, amazon.co.za, in 2024, marking its entry into the South African retail market.
Amazon’s entry into the South African retail market with amazon.co.za represents the global e-commerce giant’s inaugural venture into this sector.
Notably, its subsidiary, Amazon Web Services, has been active in the country since 2020.
Amazon’s general manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, Robert Koen, believes that this expansion will offer local sellers opportunities to rapidly grow and scale their businesses by leveraging Amazon’s innovative capabilities.
“We look forward to launching Amazon.co.za in South Africa, providing local sellers, brand owners, and entrepreneurs — small and large — the opportunity to grow their business with Amazon, and delivering great value and a convenient shopping experience for customers across South Africa,” said Koen.
More than 60% of sales in Amazon’s store are from independent sellers—most of which are small and medium-sized businesses—providing a vast selection of products, competitive prices, and great convenience for consumers
Independent sellers can now register their businesses on the platform.
The launch will bring significant competition to existing e-commerce companies in South Africa, such as Takealot.
