Cape Town — South African amapiano superstar, Tyla, revealed in a recent interview that she has been in awe of the success she’s gained from her hit song, Water.
Tyla appeared on the LA-based radio station, Power 106 where host, Justin Credible, asked her about her musical journey and how she got into the music industry.
“Ever since I was small, I knew that this was what I wanted. I just knew it! My mother would always make me sing, at every wedding and every get-together”, the singer said.
She went onto discuss her success, her upbringing in Johannesburg, the release of her debut project, her musical incfluences, as well as her excitement at being nominated for a Grammy-award. When asked about the success of Water, she said it felt “surreal”.
“Yoh, it feels so surreal. It doesn’t feel like this is happening. I sometimes have to remind myself that it’s actually happening. I’m just so blessed to be an artists at the forefront of African music. It’s the perfect time to come out swinging,” she said.
She said she had a feeling and a dream that Water would turn into a global hit song, with Justin explaining that he knew the song would be a hit song, calling it a “refreshing song”.
She then revealed that she will be releasing some more new songs and that her debut project will be dropping next year. Tyla also explained how excited she got when she heard about her Grammy nomination, saying she found it unexpected but that it made sense considering Water’s success.
“I was screaming! I was jumping and screaming. I honestly wasn’t expecting it at all. I’m so new and other artists have been around for a while, so when I saw my name, I was like ‘Okayyyyy’”, she said.
“But at the same time, it kind of makes sense. Water has done so much. It has reached so many different countries; it has crossed so many borders. So, I’m just excited to see how far it goes,” she continued.
Tyla offered words of advice to young people, saying they should go for their biggest dreams, as you would never know what your success could be if you don’t try.
Tyla also recently announced remixes of Water with American rapper Travis Scott and DJ Marshmello.
