Cape Town — Soul sensation Lira, real name Lerato Molapo, is asking fans for patience as she navigates her return to performing and creating new music.
The South African singer suffered an ischemic stroke while on tour in Frankfurt, Germany, in April 2022, which significantly affected her ability to communicate.
Now, after a two-year hiatus, Lira is gearing up for her second performance since the stroke. She will take the stage at the Magic Music Session at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on July 27.
In a recent conversation with TshisaLIVE, she shared her excitement about reuniting with her band and preparing for the show.
“It shows how much progress I have made. I can sing songs I never used to previously, and I can’t wait to show my audience how much progress I have made,” the report quoted her as saying.
“Even though I have made huge progress, the process is slow. I will ask that my fans respect the process. I’m doing my best but it takes time. So far I am able to sing more of my songs and I’m happy about that. It’s only my second performance with my band since the stroke. It is a heartfelt performance with lots of energy. We are celebrating the gift of life, after all” she said.
Post-stroke journey
In a heartfelt Instagram post from May, Lira opened up about her ongoing recovery from the stroke and the challenges she’s faced.
Despite the hurdles of relearning how to write, speak, and read over the past two years, the singer expressed her excitement about returning to the music scene.
“This was so surreal! I never thought I would be sing so soon … I’ve worked hard but there’s times when the progress was SO slow. Now I know that you can achieve anything you put your mind to – just do the work daily. Even if it seems you are making no progress – just keep going. I’m so PROUD of myself. I’m experiencing the season of being proud of myself. It was so emotional – I cried many tears yesterday – I released so much. Tears of pride, joy and triumph !! 🙏🏾❤️” she wrote.
