She turned heads on the red carpet as she wore a Roberto Cavalli-designed dress, inspired by the late American singer, Aaliyah, who wore the same dress at the 2000s MTV EMAs, TimesLIVE reported.
Tyla paid tribute to Aaliyah when she accepted her award for Best R&B Artist, in which she beat the likes of Sza and Usher, claiming that Aaliyah was a big influence on her music career.
“She’s one of my idols, so the fact that I’m winning this in her dress, like oh my God, but thank you guys so much and I’m going to go now,” an emotional Tyla said.
She brought her sister, Sydney, up on stage with her to accept the award for Best Afrobeats, which she beat the likes of Tems and Burna Boy to, and claimed that she was proud to win an award that has opened the door for African artists.
Tyla also had the opportunity to perform at the EMAs as she performed Water followed by Push 2 Start from her self-titled deluxe album.
