Cape Town – South African-born comedian and The Daily Show host, Trevor Noah says he kept his afro hairstyle because he couldn’t find a barber during the 2020 lockdown.
Trevor said this during a behind-the-scenes segment on The Daily Show when an audience member asked him why he decided to grow his hair.
“So there was a pandemic. And then I decided, I was like, ‘man I can’t see my barber, so I’m gonna grow this hair”. No, the truth is, no one could cut their hair, remember there was a part, we couldn’t just cut our hair, and then the hair just started growing and started growing, and then now you have a choice, you have a choice as a person. You go, ‘I cut my own hair,’ or, ‘ I want to keep my self-esteem’.

“Cause I was like, ‘look, my hair is doing its own thing, but I’m not gonna,” because, like, I’m loyal to my barber, do you know what I mean? I don’t just play around with just random now, especially myself, and so I was like, ‘ I’m not gonna cut it,’ and then it just grew,” said Trevor.
He continued and listed some of the benefits of having an afro.
“…My head is never hot nor cold anymore. On a hot day, I’m fine. On a cold day, I’m fine.
“The other day I was moving a TV with my younger brother, and then the TV fell. I panicked, and then it just sat on my head. It didn’t crack, it didn’t break, it didn’t dent,” Trevor told his audience.

Trevor said that now that he has an afro, he can challenge his mother to a bucket-carrying contest, which he couldn’t do when he was younger because his head hurt.
According to IOL, in some parts of South Africa, especially the villages where water is scarce, people carry buckets of water on their heads. If you don’t have big hair to help carry the bucket nicely, you need to use a cloth.
