Cape Town — The Mzansi Youth Choir are flying the South African flag proudly after they made history in the latest season of America’s Got Talent (AGT).
Just days after South African amputee dancer Musa Motha made history by being awarded a unanimous golden buzzer from the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, the Mzansi Youth Choir followed in his steps, as they received the first-ever group golden buzzer during the show’s 18th season following their incredible performance.
According to TimesLIVE, the choir performed an original song from Jane “Nightbirde” Marczewski, called It’s Ok. Nightbirde auditioned for AGT in 2021 but had to pull out due to health reasons and died of cancer a year later.
The group said they chose the song because it had gotten them through many difficulties before.
“This song has been such a pillar of strength for us as a choir. We just want to continue her legacy.”
The performance left the judges and audience in awe of their incredible performance, so much so that judge Simon Cowell was brought to tears, claiming it was the “perfect audition” and that Nightbirde would have been proud of the performance.
“Right until the end, she was so passionate about sharing her music. This has gone all over the world and you have come back here with the most amazing tribute. It was just breathtaking.”
The group golden buzzer automatically advanced the choir to the semi-finals in August 2023.
News24 reported what Mzansi Youth Choir artistic director Alfred Phakathi said the following after the performance.
“This was an incredible experience for the choir members who work very hard and finally handled that pressure with such grace. It was an immeasurable experience for each of them and also for their proud families at home.”
“Golden Buzzer Magic! ? Mzansi Youth Choir honors Nightbirde’s legacy with mesmerizing audition on #AGT. ? A powerful tribute that echoes with harmony and inspiration. ?? #AGT #GoldenBuzzer #nightbirde.”
