Cape Town —Last week, a video of a prisoner bragging about his cushy life at the Western Cape’s Goodwood Correctional Centre went viral. Since then, South African comedian Mpho ‘Pops’ Modikoane and his comedy crew have turned the incident into a hilarious parody.
As reported by eNCA the inmate in question, Bornface Banks, had his phone confiscated and was transferred to a maximum-security facility after his boasting took the internet by storm.

Following the clip’s release, Mpho Pops collaborated with fellow comedians Shanray Van Wyk, Tsitsi Chiumya, and Thabiso Mhlongo on a skit, which not only humorously addresses Banks’ claims but also pokes fun at other notorious figures in South African prisons, like Thabo Bester.
“South African prisons are nice… until lord Pieter Groenewald finds out 🫣 #ItsTheSkitsMyDog” he wrote.

This isn’t Mpho’s first time making waves with his comedic chops. Last year, he made headlines with a viral skit where he hilariously pretended to be a newsreader interviewing Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.
The parody came right after the Springboks clinched the World Cup in France, capturing fans’ imaginations and shooting Mpho to the top of the trends list.
On X, the comedic clip was shared with a photo of the Springbok captain and Mpho together, alongside a striking lookalike who bears a resemblance to the rugby star.
“After two world cups vs before two world cups. Sjoe! We have come far shem 🙆🏾♂️ Captain my captain 🫡 cc @SiyaKolisi #StrongerTogether” Mpho wrote.

Mpho recently spoke to The Citizen on the topic of his skits and said: “I think South Africans are aware of everything that happens every day you know, and people like using the term ‘we’re living in a movie or a series’. So I think when people start seeing things they resonate with, it’s easier for them to sort of understand but it’s also nice to laugh at something that just happened”
The award-winning comedian continued: “I think even with sketching, the sooner you react to something that’s current and relevant, the more traction it catches.”
