Cape Town – Veteran South African actor, Seputla Sebogodi spoke about his challenges in the entertainment industry and reflected on his acting career.
Seputha who starred in the historic movie Woman King alongside award-winning American actress, Viola Davis was speaking during an interview on the King David’s podcast.
The former Generations actor says he’s missed out on soapies and drama series gigs because of his inability to speak Zulu.
“This year I said no to five soapies or drama series. Because you ask me, ‘Can you speak Zulu’? My brother, if you can’t speak Zulu, be prepared to starve. Tell me one soapie without Zulus. I will give you a million (rand). In SA, if you can’t speak Zulu you are as good as scrambled eggs. It’s a big thing.” he said.
He also opened up about his hardships and experiences in his marriages but remains positive about giving love another chance, in spite of everything he has been through.
Seputla landed his first Safta for the character he played in Generations, Kenneth Mashaba, but the award was unfortunately destroyed in a home robbery in 2010.
Seputla told the Sowetan his mother believed he would be awarded another role.
“It was confusing for me because, sure, they stole it, but it had my name on it. Why break it? I remember my mom saying, ‘My son, you will win another one’,
“When the old lady said that I wanted to say to her this is not like buying chips at the shop. You have to go through a process of giving your best and competing with the best in the industry.” the report quoted Seputla saying, unbeknown to him at the time that he would be awarded his second Safta in 2020.
