Cape Town — South African music producer, DJ Sbu, has defended Trevor Noah over his tourism advert, saying he was doing the country a favour.
DJ Sbu appeared on The Penuel Show where, throughout the 2 hour interview, he spoke about a wide range of topics, including his MoFAYA business, cryptocurrency, podcasting, discovering your identity, before he touched on the Trevor Noah tourism advert.
Sbu defended the advert, saying that Trevor was doing South Africa a favour by giving his time to the advert, saying the likes of Black Coffee and Thuso Mbedu do not owe the public anything.
“Trevor was doing us a favour, and congratulations, it’s a dope ad! But also, Trevor is world class. Trevor hosts the Grammys, Trevor rubs shoulders with the best of the best. They are not government, they are not meant to do us any favours,” Sbu said.
“They are also from here, and when they give back, they charge next to nothing. We are being unfair to Thuso, we can’t expect Nomzamo, Coffee, Trevor, Caster. He’s doing us a favour, that bill to promote South Africa to the world would’ve been 10-20 times more.” Sbu added.
“Trevor Noah siyam’hlanyela, 😳😳😳

The new advert was released a few weeks back and caused a big reaction from Mzansi, with some praising the work Trevor did to help boost tourism in South Africa, but there remained a lot of uncertainty over the alleged R33m figure. However, the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) – who sponsored the deal – did not disclose the amount paid to Trevor.
Even Trevor himself denied receiving a R33m paycheck, following the initial announcement.
“First and foremost, can we stop saying R33m. It’s not R33m … it’s not even close to R33m. I do not take money from the government… there’s no tender,” Trevor said during his interview with Clement Manyathela on Radio 702.
