Cape Town – South African musicians Bongekile Simelane, better known as “Babes Wodumo” and her husband, Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo are determined to make things “right” in their marriage in season two of their reality TV show, Uthando Lodumo.
The two musicians’ marriage has had its ups and downs – from domestic violence allegations to a feud between Babes and her mother-in-law, with both incidents unfolding on social media.
However, the Gqom stars have made it clear that they are determined to do the right thing, make peace and unite the families.
In the first episode of season two, the musicians try to work things out between the families after the viral video of Babes hurling insults and threatening to beat up Mampitsha’s mother after she disapproved of their wedding.
Although at the time the video went viral, Babes apologised and claimed it was a publicity stunt, she admitted during the show that her actions were driven by the pain of not being accepted as a bride by her in-laws.
“I was wrong. I did all that because I was hurt … Not being accepted by my in-laws is painful. Other girls are loved by their mothers-in-law — they embrace them. Mine has never embraced me. Instead I was greeted with a video riddled with profanities,” she said.
Mampintsha’s mother, Zamanguni Gumede, on the other hand, said she felt disrespected because the wedding went on without her due to a mishap drivers.
“I was really annoyed. I felt disrespected. You’re my only son and I’m your mother. I deserve to be respected,” said Gumede.
Speaking on Babes’ insults video that went viral, she said it would have been better if the incident happened in private and not in public.
“I’m not her friend. I’m her mother-in-law. It would’ve been better if she had sworn at me over the phone instead of on social media. She was out of hand,” said Mampitsha’s mother.
Mampitsha also shared his concerns about the fact that his mother had never met her grandson.
“My mother has never met my son and that doesn’t sit well with me. We’ve had our differences in the past and there are many stories out there, but eventually, we have come together, have conversations and unite families,” said Mampitsha.

It looks like things are looking up for the Gqom star couple, as Mampitsha recently took to his Instagram page to share a picture of his mother kissing Babes on the cheek.
And on closer inspection of the picture, it appears as if Gumede was holding a baby wrapped in baby blankets.
