Cape Town — South Africa will be well-represented at the upcoming Grammy awards as two rising stars, Tyla and Musa Keys, have both been nominated.
Tyla’s worldwide hit song, Water, and Musa Keys’ featured hit with Davido, Unavailable, have both been nominated in the category of Best African Musical Performance.
According to the Grammys website, The Best African Musical Performance category is one of three newly-added categories and is a breakthrough for African music.
“Giving African music its own category would highlight and celebrate the diversity and richness of Africa,” they said.
The five nominees for the inaugural Best African Music Performance at the 66th GRAMMY Awards signal the commercial and cultural prowess of the continent’s music.

The Grammys described Tyla as a star in her own country and explained why the song has such a great appeal.
“The youngest nominee on this list and the lone South African artist, 21-year-old Tyla is already a star in her home country, having been nominated for two South African Music Awards. It’s easy to see the crossover appeal of “Water”, which could be mistaken for an American pop song if not for the sweltering Amapiano instrumental underneath.”
The Grammys acknowledged that Unavailable was Davido’s song but recognised Musa Keys’ role as the featured artist.
“A brighter, smoother take on the sound with triumphant choral vocals on the hook, it features confident verses from Davido and collaborator Musa Keys,” the Grammys said.
Both artists took to their respective X account and acknowledged their nominations. Tyla uploaded a Simpsons meme with the South African flag pasted over the picture, while Musa Keys was thankful to God for his first nomination, also tagging featured artist Davido for their joint nomination.
