Cape Town — The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) took place this past weekend and Mzansi’s global superstar, Tyla, walked away with four awards on the night.
The SAMAs are South Africa’s most prestigious music award show with 33 awards on offer for some of South Africa’s biggest and best music stars. Among the notable nominees included Amapiano star, Tyla, who had five nominations and rapper and producer, Kabza De Small, who had three nominations.
In what was her first nomination for the SAMAs, Tyla scooped the award for Best Pop Album, Best Newcomer, and the prestigious award for Female Artist of the Year. Tyla also scooped the International Achievement Award and thanked her fans for the support shown to her to make her a global star.
According to The South African, Tyla was unable to attend the SAMAs but she was grateful for the recognition she received for the award and said it was not just a personal achievement, but a testament of her fans and her team.
“I can’t wait to keep making music that resonates with people,” she said.

It may have come as a suprise to some that Tyla did not win the award for Album of the Year, perhaps the most prestigious award on offer at the SAMAs. She lost out to Kabza De Small and Mthunzi for “Isimo”. Kabza also managed to secure the award for Best Amapiano Album and Group of the Year with Mthunzi.
Other notable winners included uGatsheni, who won the awards Male Artist of the Year and Best Maskandi Album for Uyihlo noNyoko. Priddy Ugly, who won Best Hip-Hop Album with “Dust”, Dlala Thukzin, Sykes and Zaba, who won Best Collaboration with “iPlan”, and Soul Brothers for Best Traditional Music Album for “Hamba Naye”.
The full list of winners can be found on the SAMAs website.
