Cape Town – Twitter has spiralled into a frenzy after Charlize Theron said that Afrikaans is a “dying language” during a podcast.
The Hollywood actress, who is originally from Benoni, was chatting to the hosts of the popular American podcast ‘SmartLess’, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes.
However, the show’s American audience may not have seen this interview as controversial as South Africans may have.
The quote from the podcast that has got the Mzansi portion of Twitter speaking is Charlize’s perception of Afrikaans, which she expressed.
“There are about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language,” The South African-American actress said in the podcast.
What is Twitter saying?
Well, one particular user, @MadiBoity, seemed to be confused, questioning what was going on.
“Has Charlize Theron joined the EFF? I think fighters gave her a beret and now she says Afrikaans is only spoken by 44 people in SA and isn’t a helpful language. Wat gaan aan?” he asked in a tweet.
Other tweeps also joked about what Charlize had said.
