Cape Town — South Africa’s Grammy-award-winning star, Tyla leads the nominees for the upcoming 30th anniversary of the South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
With 33 categories in total, there are plenty of prizes on offer for South Africa’s top music stars to win, including coveted prizes such as Best Album of the Year, Male and Female Artists of the Year, as well as Best Album in various music categories including gqom, kwaito, hip-hop and more.
Leading the nominations this year is Tyla, who received five nominations for SAMPRA Album of the Year, Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year, SANTAM Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Best Collaboration for her track Water featuring Travis Scott.
Three artists are close behind her as Kabza De Small, Mthunzi and Khoza each have three nominations. Kabza will compete against Tyla for Album of the Year, while he is also nominated for Best Amapiano Album for Isimo, as well as Duo/Group of the Year with Mthunzi.

According to IOL, Nhlanhla Sibisy, the CEO of the Recording Industry of South Africa, was enthusiastic about the shortlist for this year’s awards.
“We are thrilled to congratulate the nominees for Sama30. This year’s selection showcases the incredible diversity, talent and creativity in South African music, which is aligned with the ethos of the Samas. We are excited to celebrate these outstanding achievements at the upcoming awards ceremony,” Sibisi said.
He extended his congratulations to the artists nominated.
“We honour not only your artistry but the passion and perseverance that drive you to push the boundaries of South African music,” he added.
