Cape Town – Rachel Kolisi has been vocal about the lack of diversity in South Africa’s hair salons and spoke out about how certain salons do not cater to certain hair types.
Rachel took to her Instagram page and shared a photo of herself, her children Nicholas and Keziah and husband Siya’s sister, Liphelo, who were all able to get their hair done at the same place for the first time. She said the hair salon was Rolf Offerman Hair Dressing in Ballito.
“The first time EVER we could all have our hair done at the same place. I forgot to post this a few months ago, but something that I’ve been thinking about for some time, is why so many hair salons in SA specifically, only offer services for ‘either or’.”
“We had gone to a few places this day trying to get a hair cut for Nic after being told 3 times “we can’t cut hair like that” found a spot where all of our hair was celebrated, and my goodness we loved it! Generally, just feel salons could do better, and diversify 💁🏼♀️,” she added.

Many of Rachel’s followers took to the comments section and applauded her for calling out the salons, and some shared their own stories and experiences at a hair salon.
“This is such an interesting perspective🤔🤔 inclusivity everywhere, we could do better,” one follower said.
“In my years of working as a stylist, when we had a request I made sure that we educated ourselves on the process or services needed. As a salon owner we now are equipped to manage all hair types and services. Therefor we turn no clients away,” another added.
“Such an important post for inclusivity. Thank you for sharing this. You are a star,” another comment read.
